Children face £50 fines for dropping litter

News in Brief - Daily Telegraph of 23th October 2003.

A former mining area is to become the first in Britain where children from the age of 11 will be fined up to £50 if they are caught dropping litter.

Wardens, police community support officers and education welfare officers will be able to hand out the fixed penalty notices in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Parents will be urged not to pay fines for the culprits who, it is hoped, will be left to meet the demand themselves.
