AS UK Politics homework for Jan-May 2010

Mr Happy always showsa bibliography at the end of his essays

(1) IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HAND IN YOUR HOMEWORK ON TIME. It is NOT your teachers job to remind you to do the work.

(2) Please DO NOT e-mail homework (it can get lost) - place it inside the RED BOX in the Laws classroom BEFORE 3.15pm ON THE DATE SHOWN. You will lose marks if you hand in an essay which does not show an essay plan. If your homework is handed in late (even by just a few seconds) or without a Self-assessment Sheet - you will be given a fail grade.

(3) IF YOUR ESSAY IS THIN and/or lacks depth and analysis YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO IT AGAIN. Plan a structured answer to the question - start early because the first draft is generally unacceptable.

Essay UK-5 -  Produce an essay answering the following question: 'The doctrine of Parliamentary sovereignty has been undermined by numerous factors'. Discuss.

Guidance: In answering this question you need to define and discuss/analyse the importance of Parliamentary sovereignty. To provide a comprehensive answer you may need to research the original proponent of parliamentary sovereignty (don't forget about the need for a bibliography and the use of footnotes). Parliamentary sovereignty has several components and these could be reflected in your discussion/answer.

Rather than tell you how to write the essay, I provide a list of key terms political terms - some of which you may decide to use:

European Union, Factortame, Executive dominance, Prime Ministerial government, Whips, representational theory, Burkean representation, Delegates legitimacy, constitution, codified and/or un-codified.

Always do a plan first (show it in your answer). Answer the question and do this early - preferably in your introduction. Give an early opinion, in order to help display some evaluation. This question is leading, but do not feel compelled to agree with the statement. If you display an argument about the freedom of the UK Parliament to leave the EU - remember to discuss the pros and cons of the argument. Provide examples, opinion, and discussion, throughout your answer. Do not fail to include a brief conclusion explaining how you have reached your argument and structured the discussion/answer.

This is not an easy question, so start your homework research/answer early - (late homework is given a fail grade which impacts upon your ILP). Make use of past essay answers found in the Essay Competition - but do not copy. Do not forget the need for a Self-assessment sheet - without it your work will fail. Remember - the marks are in the discussion.Follow the 'Essay writing guidance'.
