Q1 - Billy is looking forward to going out to a nightclub with some of his friends. He takes an illegal drug two hours before leaving his house in order to improve his enjoyment of his anticipated rave. Once inside the club he drinks very heavily. He takes a purse he sees lying on a table and removes a £10 note from it before replacing the purse on the table.

Billy then becomes involved in an argument with another clubber, James, who has been watching him. In his confused state Billy thinks that James is about to hit him so he punches James in the face knocking him out and breaking his jaw. Billy sees a security man approaching him and pushes him aside as he runs out of the club.

Consider any offences that Billy may have committed and advise him whether he may be able to rely on any defences if he were to be charged [50 marks] OCR 2572 June 2003.
